Joseph Unstoppable in Autum Open

October 18th, 2014

Last Friday it turned out to be Mission Impossible also for Koji to try to stop in-form Joseph cruising towards his 5th victory. Henry, who only conceded a loss against Joseph did good business in solidifying his 2nd spot with a win against Richard.

Long is appearantly throwing all rustiness off him that came from 10 years no play as he secured an important win against Hannah who hasn’t found her form yet.

Ray convincingly drew against Miguel Angel and James with black against Michel defended fiercefully enough to win the game and as such he slowly crawled to 3rd place already which comes with the honor to try to stop Joseph next week in round 6…

Wo Hang claims top position in DB competition

September 21st, 2014

The Avanced group had a day of non-competition casual chess.

Some casual games in the Advanced group

Some casual games in the Advanced group

In the top 3 in the Beginners / Intermediate group Wo Hang achieved an important win against Suneh in round 6 through which they switches places: Wo Hang now leads, followed by Suneh and Ritvik.

Noah kept Jay away from a 100 percent score by beating him in round 6 but then in round 7 Noah found it impossible to stop the in-form Wo Hang.

Nathan in round 6 won against Ada, who resigned too early in the game, but in round 7 lost from Saga who after her 2 wins today seems to be recovering slowly from form loss in the lost couple of weeks.

Brothers Gobind and Arjun were unfortunately paired against each other in round 6 and after a desastrous, for Arjun, touch of the queen which had to move to only bad squares, Gobind had a comfortable win.

New member Nitai fared well in round 6 against Koza and won with a second difference on the clock. In round 7, though, recently promoted Kian beat Nitai  – it was a good day for Kian who also won his game in round 6 against Victor.

Hop Hang lost in round 6 against Seth but recovered well in round 7 with a win against Gobind.

Kaya also scored one win today in round 7 against Arjun after her earlier loss in round 6 against Maximilien.

Round 5 Saturday Internal Competition Discovery Bay

September 14th, 2014

Hectic times last Saturday at Discovery Bay when we played rounds 4 and 5 in the competition with all tables fully occupied.

In the Beginners/Intermediate group  Suneh, Wo Hang and Ritvik consolidated their top spots with Noah following closely. Jay won both his first games in the competition and being the only player with 100% score so far he is surely moving upwards too.

In the Advanced group various players played their first games. Brothers James K and Harold for example, who had a good day against Mei Jing who lost both her games against them.

Teddy also played his first games against against James K and Harold and managed to win from Harold but lost against James K.

Koji kept on playing strong and beat Samira and as Miguel Angel and Richard also won, against Bryant and Joshua respectively, the top 4 has broken loose a bit, but with Koji strongly in the lead.

Autumn YGP Round 2 and Autumn Open Round 1

September 10th, 2014

Autumn Open

Because of the tournament in Singapore in which Caissa participated with several teams, round 1 last Friday of the Autumn Open only had 3 games going with BYEs from James, Richard, Koji, Hannah and David.

The game between the two youth players Toby and Ray ended with a win for Toby. Melvin, another youth, lost with white against Henry and Joseph, number 2 in the winter competition earlier this year beat Michel who, perhaps still a little bit jet lagged, blundered a rook.

An interesting game in the next round will definitely be between Joseph and Hannah who in the last winter competition had an intense and explosive game.

Autumn YGP1

Also in this group last Sunday we had 5 BYEs from Richard, James, Miguel Angel, Harold and Mei Jing who were playing for Caissa in Singapore.

Nonetheless we had some interesting results.

On board 1 Benjamin scored a win against Andy who in the previous round had beaten Richard, one of Caissa’s best youth. And on board 2 Sabrina continued her winning streak against Steven who had managed to beat Marco in the previous round.

Samach, who had a BYE last week drew against Oliver on board 3 and on board 4 Ronald was back winning against Teddy after his last week loss against Benjamin.

On board 5 Marco made no mistake this time and scored a point against Toby while on board 6 the advantage in the game moved back and forth between Thomas and Samuel, finally ending with a win for Samuel.

On board 7 Ray played a solid Philidor against Rachel but a small miscalculation resulted in material loss and a point for Rachel.

Louis had a BYE.

the new pairing will be announced every Thursday with Wednesday the cut-off to request a BYE (only 2 BYEs allowed in first 4 rounds).

Discovery Bay Competition Started – 4 players with 100 percent score

August 30th, 2014

After a long summer holiday we finally started our first rounds of the competition.

In the Beginners/Intermediate Group Ritvik, Seth and Noah proceeded as they ended the previous season: in great form, winning both of their games.

Wo Hang started off well with a win against Suneh but lost against Ritvik in round 2. Suneh, on the other hand recovered in round 2 from his first round loss by winning in the longest game of the day against Arjun, one of our new members who had won his first round game against Maximilien. Maximilien in the second round regained ground by winning from Arjun’s brother, Gobind, another new member. Earlier in the first round Hop Hang, another new member, had tricked Gobind into opening up his black king side which was exploited by the white queen coming in and checkmating the black king from nearby. But the second round Hop Hang stumbled against Noah who, as mentioned earlier, had won both games.

Many more thing happened on the 10 boards in this group over a timespan of just 90 minutes and it will surely be an interesting competition moving forward as other new players, like Ada and Nathan who tried their first competition game ever, drawing against each other, will gain more experience.

In the Advanced Group newly promoted  Joshua did well against Bryant in a fast game with a big trick. Koji impressed by consistently winning 3 games in a row. The most spectacular game was probably that between Miguel Angel and James N who threw in an interesting 2 pawn sacrifice in a bishop end game against Miguel Angel which forced a stalemate.

Although Koji is the man to beat now, all players will gradually gain back their form – it is a long way to the end. Exciting!

Season Start: Prizes for top performers of last season

August 18th, 2014

August is always a quiet month with many people still to return from their holidays into their Hong Kong daily routines. The formal competition will thus start from the first Saturday in September and in the weeks of August until then we will be playing casual blitz and rapid chess.

As such we had 3 small round robin groups of rapid games. In the Advanced group Miguel Angel was the best scoring player with 3 straight wins out of 3 games. In the Intermediate group it was Ian who scored most and in the Beginners group Seth managed to be the best scoring player with 3 wins.

As part of breaking the ice of the new season we awarded well deserved trophies to the prize winners of last season.

In the Beginners group 2nd placed Alex To wasn’t there but Wo Hang and Kian, respectively 1st and 3rd Prize, were glad to accept their trophies. All three players are promoted to the Intermediate group.

In the Intermediate group 2nd placed Joshua wasn’t there either but Ian also gladly received his 1st Prize. Both players were promoted to the Advanced group.

The special Prize of Most Improved Player went to Seth who managed in record time to finish the Step 1 level course from scratch and end in the top half of the competition.

We were very glad also to welcome three new members: welcome aboard Hop Hang, Victor and Teddy!

Alberto Muniz Champion Caissa Discovery Bay 3rd Open Blitz

July 13th, 2014

It was already our 3rd edition of the Discovery Bay Open Blitz last Saturday and despite the traditionally quiet summer period we were glad to welcome 37 players to our event which was different from previous years, and in many ways more demanding.

We started off with qualifiers of 10 minutes per person games, 7 rounds of Swiss. And whereas this is when many a tournament is concluded, we played another 7 rounds of 5 minutes per person in the round robin group finals.

In the qualifier rounds the 1st DB open Champion, Cyril Anicete, proved to be top of the pack again with Daniel Lam, Hong Kong’s highest rated player and our recent number 2 in the Caissa Winter Blitz on 1 March 2014 – both scoring 6 points.

Alberto Muniz, 2014 Champion of Hong Kong Chess Federation players, had also qualified for the Champion Group with 5 points and this group was completed to 8 persons with the 5 points scoring Caissa youth members Melvin Cheung and James Kwong and youngsters Raphael Chang (4.5 points) and Ernest Cheung (5.5 points!) together with our visiting guest Chiu Liang (4.5 points) from Shenzhen Chess Club.

The Round Robin Finals Groups were determined by adding numbers 1-8 in the Champion Group, numbers 9-16 in Group B, numbers 17-24 in Group C and so forth. This way everybody had a good chance to compete for a prize against opponents of more or less equal scores in the qualifiers.

In Group E, Toby, our newest Caissa member, won 5 of his 6 games showing he clearly prefers the speed of 5 minutes games – well done! Ip, in his first tournament, had lost some games due to unfamiliarity with some of the Blitz rules but he showed he is a worthy first-time-tournament player claiming 2nd place with 4 points.

Group D saw our unleashed Caissa member Teddy score 100% in this 5 minutes games version of blitz – good job! Lan, our visiting player from Shenzhen got 2nd prize with 5 points, and as such did a good job as well by staying ahead of our Caissa youth players Samira, Mei Jing, Harold and Wo Hang and another strong youngster, Bosco.

In Group C Umberto and Zhi Yan both scored 4.5 points but because Zhi Yan had won against Umberto she won 2nd prize on tie-break. Well done Zhi Yan and perhaps next time it is your turn Umberto – thanks for already having visited our tournaments since our 1st Blitz!

The winner of Group C though was our very own Caissa member James Nichols, only conceding 2 draws. Congrats!

In Group B we had a few players who just missed the Champion Group by maximum half a point or so – and they were ready for some kind of revenge … Caissa’s Miguel Angel scored 5.5 points in this strong field to win 2nd prize and Nicole, the new-in-town Woman FIDE Master, secured 1st Prize with an impressive 6 points in this strong group.

In the Champion Group Caissa’s 9 year old James Kwong did very well by scoring 3.5 points amidst the titans of Hong Kong chess, as did Caissa’s youngster Melvin who played an extraordinary strong tournament and scored 3 points in this group.

However, the strength and experience of Hong Kong’s top players Daniel and Alberto was too overwhelming. Daniel scored 5.5 points to confidently secure 2nd Prize, one full point ahead of the best ranked player in the qualifiers, Cyril. But the strongest player in the 5 minutes blitz was the undisputed champion with 7 straight wins, Alberto Muniz.

All in all, it was a great day of chess in Discovery Bay, and to the people who played or watched 14 games of hard fought chess battles, it must have gone unnoticed this is actually a sleepy town where a golf cart is about the maximum excitement you can get.

And for Caissa, we are proud to have 4 prize winners among the 10 prize winners of the day. And to both our Caissa members and other players who did not win a prize this time – keep on practicing and hope to see you all in our coming Autumn chess tournaments of Standard and Rapid Chess: registration is open!
