Interport Caissa Pearl Delta Cup Stays in Macao

The Pearl Delta Cup 2013 and other Prizes

On a beautiful Saturday morning 16 Hong Kong youth chess players and 23 accompanying supporters took the ferry to Macao to play in the Hong Kong – Macao Interport Chess Match and defend the Pearl Delta Cup the Hong Kong team had won in the home match on 2 March 2013.

In Macao, Jose Silvereinho, the President of the Macao Chess Federation, welcomed us at the ferry terminal and with a coach bus he had arranged we were smoothly brought to the chess venue about 15 minutes before start of the first game. The venue turned out to be a very nice place, provided to the Macao Chess Federation by the government several years ago, with our opponents and their supporters awaiting us.

Jose had already let know that this time Macao’s line up was the strongest possible with 11 out of their 16 players representing Macao at the World Youth Chess Championship in Al Ain in December 2013

Our line-up was still very solid and the reason why most of our youth do not participate (we do have 2 Caissa players representing Hong Kong) in the World Youth is not related to lack of quality but more so the absence of government support into the Hong Kong Chess Federation to subsidize the costs, e.g., with 80% like the Macao government does.

If there was any worry about our line-up, it was related to the fact that seven of our players had to play in older age categories. But all seven were Hong Kong’s top players in their age categories and they would surely put up a fight one age group up.

The tournament was played over 4 rounds, a round robin, meaning that all players would play against all 4 opponents in their group.

Our U6-U8 team with Harold, Mei Jing, Regis and Maxwell faced very strong opposition. Despite some very impressive wins of several of our players, the Macao team won this age group convincingly. Yet, Mei Jing, with her 2 points, won the best girl trophy and saved our honor.

Our U10 team with Marco, Rachel, Miguel Angel and Gerent was our best performing team. We won the age group prize, also because we had a very strong Marco score 3.5 points and as a side effect collected the individual 1st prize – well done! Rachel, Miguel Angel, Gerent and a Macao player had all scored 2 points and had to play a tie-break round robin for 3rd prize which was won by the Macao player. The 2 points for Rachel, however, entitled her to get the best girl trophy and as such in this age group we grossed three prizes!

Our U12 team with James, Ray, Samira and Bryant faced probably the strongest Macao team relative to age. James was able to score a couple of points here but unfortunately, apart from Ray who courageously played his first tournament, the fact that our other three players were younger than U12, and much less experienced on the whole, took its toll.

Our U14 team, with Melvin, Katrina, Edrien and Richard, put up great resistance. All players scored some points. After 4 rounds Richard had to play a tie-break for first place which he lost to a much older and more experienced player and Katrina had a tie-break match for third prize which she unfortunately lost on time before she could start check mating her opponent with a queen up in the end game.

Macao deservedly won and many congratulations to our Macao friends. We were glad to have participated in a very well-organized match in a friendly atmosphere and we look forward to meet again next year, which will be a home match.

On our organization side, we will try to improve on the recruitment of our players, via e.g., an open registration, to avoid that too many players have to play an age group up – as this is a significant influencing factor. Apologies.

Hong Kong Juniors Championship 2013

November 11th, 2013

On Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 November the Kowloon Technical School turned into a venue for 150 players to compete for the title of Hong Kong Junior Champion 2013 in their respective age categories of U7 through U18. Our Caissa youth participated in the U7 and U10 age categories.

Under 7

Players U7 started on Sunday afternoon to work through 7 rounds of 10 minutes per person blitz games. Mei Jing Garceran Wang was Caissa’s only representative and hope in this age group and she started off very well with 4 straight wins.

In the 5th round her ferocious attack with black was leaving too many weak squares in her own defense; enough for Aaditya Kadam to win material such that Mei Jing, having to think too long, lost on time.

In round 6, a piece up against Harold Kwong, Harold still found a way to achieve perpetual check. An unlucky draw for Mei Jing, however, in round 7 against Tommy Yau, Mei Jing crawled through the eye of the needle managing to checkmate her oponnent in a very bad position.

Give and take, the end result of the top 5 did justice to all players who remained very close. Mei Jing ended 4th  and was again the best girl of Hong Kong in U7. Well done!

Under 10

Caissa’s 5 players Richard Takasumi, Chor Wei Tang, Gerent Lee, Samira Salwan (all Discovery Bay Club) and Ray Sze (Sheung Wan Club) competed in the largest group of 78 players. Miguel Angel Garceran Wang, being sick, had to stay home and could not participate.

Ray, playing for the first time in this age group, scored 2.5 points ending on 59th place. Samira, who unfortunately missed the first game, still scored 4 points to climb up to 28th position in the end. Gerent, also playing in this age group for the first time, scored 4 points like Samira and ended 20st.

Chor Wei played his best national championship tournament so far scoring 5 points to end with the same amount of points as number 6, Ronald Choy, but on tie-break finally ranked 15th. Good progress!

Richard, who ended number 2 last year scored 6 points to end shared 2nd with James Kwong (last year’s champion) but on tie-break finally ended 3rd. Very impressive of these boys to continuously stay at the top – but this year’s champion was a 7 wins scoring girls, Chingchi Wong, from Shenzhen. Congratulations to you all.

CM Collin Madhavan’s Chess Clinic in Chai Wan and Discovery Bay Ends Very Well!

July 12th, 2013

The Caissa Summer Festival chess clinics by coach Collin this week on Monday and Tuesday in Chai Wan and Thursday and Friday here in Discovery Bay ended after 8 hours of instructions, games, puzzles and, above all, fun in chess for over 20 youth players.

Collin, again, managed to instill and grow interest in the beautiful game of chess and that remains a noteworthy achievement for this age group who love to play computer games and toys that blink and bleep more – even more so during holidays.

Some of the participants we will see back in tomorrow’s tournament, some we will defintely see in other future tournaments. You are all warned!

Spring Competition Round 2 Results

April 27th, 2013

The Intermediate group on Thursday 25 April played round 2 of the spring competition. Bryant continued his winning streak winning from Jay and Franz scored a half against Ian who got his second stalemate on the board! Max recovered from his loss in round 1 by getting the full point against Jonathan and Mees, back again, scored a win against Sophie.

On Saturday the Advanced group played their round 2 as well. It was very good to see Gerent joining today coming from far out of Discovery Bay. Gerent with white played his first game against Wilson who just out of the opening got his bishop trapped on d5. Sacrificing the bishop for a pawn on h2 was not enough to avert the upcoming white attack on the queen side where black had castled.

Chor Wei unfortunately lost his queen in the middle game and had to resign soon after that against Mei Jing. Bryant lost against Miguel Angel and we got an interesting ranking now with 6 players with 1 point.

Junior Rapid Chess Tournament Sunday 21 April

April 23rd, 2013

The German-Swiss School was host to a very well HKCF organized event on Sunday 21 April that attracted over 100 children of whom some 50 played in the Under 10 age group.

Congratulations to Michael Yang who could play in the Under 13 age group but played in and won first prize in Under 18 (9 players). Also congratulations to Benjamin Oh who won the Under 13 (20 players). Both players are well known at Caissa and performed very well in earlier Caissa organized events, like the Hong Kong – Macao Pearl Delta Cup.

The Under 10 age group was won by Ho Pang Huang, a strong player residing in Shenzhen, just ahead of local talent James Kwong who ended second on tie-break. Caissa’s Miguel Angel Garceran Wang ended 5th.

Congratulations, finally, to Harold Kwong who won the Under 7 age group (15 players) with 7 points out of 7: a worthy National Champion. Caissa’s Mei Jing Garceran Wang ended as first girl in this age group on the 5th place.

Spring Competition Results Round 1

April 20th, 2013

Before last Thursday meeting ended in a dynamic transfer chess festivity, the spring competition had yielded its first results from round 1. Both Jonathan and Bryant secured their first win against Franz and Max respectively and Ian shared half a point with Sophie upon stalemating her.

On Saturday we welcomed another new member in the Beginners group, James Gui, who already played for Discovery College in the inter-school championship earlier this year and as P1 student scored a good 2 points. James, Kian and Kaya focused on check mate puzzles whereas Mikael, Mohamed and Kaiden played games, with, and equally distracted by, clocks…

In the Intermediate Group on Saturday the 2 games that were adjourned last week were finished with Bryant defeating Mei Jing and Wilson scoring the full point against Chor Wei.

New Members and Visitors Mark the first week after Easter

April 15th, 2013

With pleasure we see that the Intermediate Group was almost complete present on 11 April, the first meeting after the Easter break: Ian, Maxwell, Jonathan, Franz, Jay and Sophie. With Mees hopefully joining from next time this group is ready to start the Intermediate Club competition, playing 1 game each week until end of season in June.

The Beginners Group from 1.30pm on Saturday 13 April was also well populated with Kaiden, Julien and Mikael present. James and Kian were there too trying the Saturday out and glad also that Gauri was there for the first time as a member now after having taken a few small-group lessons on Saturday morning. We hope to see Etienne, Mohamed and Ting Ting back soon as also for the Beginners Group we will start a competition. Finally, it was great to see three new girls visiting and trying some chess out. We would be heading towards a majority of girls in this group which would be a rather unique situation.

The Advanced Group from 3.30pm started their first round of the competition already. The games could not be finished in time and are adjourned to next week when we will get the results: Bryant vs. Mei Jing and Wilson vs. Chor Wei. Miguel Angel had a bye and hopefully we will see Gerent next week and also Ruaidhri when his schedule allows.

On Saturday there is now availability for 2 participants in the 11-11.45am small-group class and for 1 participant in the 12-12.45pm class.

Hong Kong – Guangzhou Invitational Tournament. Hong Kong Team Wins Again!

March 11th, 2013

In the weekend of 8, 9 and 10 of March an official Guangzhou Chess delegation visited Hong Kong to play against Hong Kong’s top 15 youth in the age categories U8 to U14.

Many players of the Hong Kong team who had also secured the Pearl Delta Cup 2013 for Hong Kong against Macao, and also played in the Hong Kong – East Lake Guangzhou Chess Club tournament were meeting their Guangzhou age peers on Friday in a double round robin (playing once with black and once with white against the same opponent).

In round 1 Hong Kong beat Guangzhou with 9-7. Hong Kong also won  round 2 to end the team match in a win for Hong Kong of 17.5-12.5. From Caissa Miguel Angel won both his games but Mei Jing lost twice and it shows it is not easy to play U8 when you are 6.

On Saturday morning and Sunday morning the tournament changed into a mixed individual event where every player, irrespective of which chess federation or age group, would play 4 rounds in one Swiss paired group.

Congratulations to U14 Peisen Lin from Guangzhou who emerged as winner of the tournament after winning from Hong Kong’s Champion U12 Michael Yang in an exciting 5 minutes blitz when Michael’s time was up 7 seconds before Peisen’s.

It is good to see that the top 10 is populated with 6 Hong Kong players, including U10 players like James Kwong and Richard Takasumi.

From Caissa perspective, U8 Miguel Angel’s 2 points, including losses against the champion U14 Peisen and 4th ranked U12 Adrian Chui, were decent enough in this very strong field.
